The Japanese Women in the 2020 Summer Olympics might be the strongest team to ever come into an International Tournament as an underdog!  To sum it up, Japan are the hosts of the tournament, Olympic silver medalists (2012), FIFA Women’s World Cup champions (2011) and FIFA Women’s World Cup runners-up (2015).  So, how could they be coming into the competition as underdogs?

Although Japan had massive success from 2008-2015, the Japanese women have struggled in the 5 years since.  Not qualifying for the 2016 Olympics and finishing in the round of 16 in the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup both represent the low points in Japan’s national program’s run of poor results.  You might be asking yourself with that recent form, what makes Japan worthy of a ‘Ones To Watch’ tag for the New Generation Fan?

There are two main points: Firstly, they are hosting the event!  Japan is a nation that will support their team vehemently throughout the competition.  Through the ups and downs fans will be behind Japan, especially given the fans have been starved of sports for parts of the year. They will be raring to support their women’s team!  Secondly, the fact is that despite some of those poor results over the last 5 years, the squad that was announced yesterday is extremely strong! From top to bottom there are strong players from some of the biggest clubs in the world.

Check out their squad list by following the link below for their two June friendlies, let us know what you think of their chances this summer in the comments!
