Ones To Watch – Canada

Canada has only been to one FIFA World Cup, in 1986, since they have never been all that close to qualifying.  It might come as a surprise to most but in fact, soccer is the most played youth sport in the country! That has led to a steady increase in talent but not until recently did Canadians start appearing around Europe’s top leagues.   Take a look at the 1986 World cup squad and a combination starting eleven from the last two 2022 World Cup qualifying matches.

In 1986 Canada had eight players playing in domestic leagues, mostly from the NASL (North American Soccer League).  When you compare that to this years’ team – only one domestic player – the trajectory of the national team and soccer in Canada in general is pretty clear; UP!

It is easy to say Alphonso Davies is a flash in the pan, but perhaps if this trend continues, he can be the start of an incredible uprising for Canada in world soccer.
